A FLAG Local Coordinator (LC) functions as an independent contractor who represents FLAG in their local community. LCs play a vital role in the lives of international students who are developing their world view. LCs have the opportunity to ensure that view is built on a foundation of appreciation, trust and mutual respect. LCs' efforts not only impact international relations today and tomorrow but for decades to come!

The role of a Local Coordinator (LC) is simple but very valuable. As an LC, you will:

1. Identify & recruit quality host families
2. Serve as the liaison between FLAG, the host family and the student
3. Support the host family and the student during the student’s long or short-term exchange
4. Build global friendships that will last a lifetime!

Is Being an LC a Full-Time or Part-Time Position?
This is a FLEXIBLE position! Currently, our Local Coordinators range from stay-at-home mothers to church ministry leaders to retired seniors, and everything in between. Many Local Coordinators do this part-time while having full-time jobs! As an LC you determine how many students you are comfortable working with.
Am I An Employee of FLAG? How Am I Paid?
A FLAG Local Coordinator functions as an independent contractor in the placement and on-program support of international students while in the U.S. LCs are compensated for each placement they make, and then during the supporting months, LCs receive a monthly income as long as reports are timely. The amount an LC is compensated depends on the number of students they are working with.
How Does It Work?
As a Local Coordinator, you will build relationships within your local community through family members, friends, neighbors, schools, civic and religious groups. Your efforts will lead to finding host families who share your passion for exchange and who are excited to host an exchange student for one or two semesters. Hosting means more than the basics of providing a roof over a student's head. Being accepted as a FLAG host family means the ability to welcome a new member into one's home, share everday lives, and getting to know each other's culture.
What If I Have No Experience?
No problem! When you become a Local Coordinator, you will be given online trainings that cover all the basics, as well as access to many useful FLAG resources. You will also work closely with a FLAG Chapter Leader who can answer all your questions and support you along the way. Additionally, we have a team of Support Specialists who step in and assist should issues arise with host families or students. We support our Local Coordinators during the entire placement process and program year.
Is This a Remote Position?
While it’s not fully remote, it is primarily remote. Local Coordinators will conduct a home visit for potential families as well as an orientation (don’t worry, FLAG offers trainings and resources to assist with both of these!). Then LCs are required to visit the student and host family in-person once per semester. Apart from that, all monthly contact can be done by phone, and all reports and other forms are submitted online. This position provides flexibility to work when it’s convenient for you.
